Subject: Best Sphere Fitting
Hi,
Does anyone know which algorithm(s) I can use to fit the "best" sphere
to a set of 3-D coodinates. In this case I have a set of electrode
coordinates on a head (scalp) and wish to find the best sphere through
them. Apologies if this is a very simple/well known problem and
solution.

Subject: Help with Maxwell Equations
I am trying to model the response of the Maxwell equations (separable,
partial diffferential equations) in three dimensions, to driving terms
of arbitrary spatial configuration (confined to a plane) along one edge
of the system. It would be very convenient to have a package written
to do this that cost nothing, but I would be grateful for any help.

Subject: Parallel Iterative Methods Package
We would like to announce the availability of the Parallel Iterative Methods
(PIM) package.
PIM is a collection of Fortran routines designed to solve systems of
linear equations (SLEs) on parallel computers using iterative methods.
PIM offers a number of iterative methods, including
- Conjugate-Gradients (CG),
- Bi-Conjugate-Gradients (Bi-CG),
- Conjugate-Gradients squared (CGS),
- The stabilised version of Bi-Conjugate-Gradients (Bi-CGSTAB),
- Generalised minimal residual (GMRES),
- Generalised conjugate residual (GCR),
- Conjugate-Gradients for normal equations with minimisation of the
residual norm (CGNR),
- Conjugate-Gradients for normal equations with minimisation of the
error norm (CGNE), and
- Transpose-free quasi-minimal residual (TFQMR).
The routines allow the use of preconditioners; the user may choose to use
left-, right- or symmetric-preconditioning. Several stopping criteria can
also be chosen.
PIM has been tested on networks of workstations using PVM 3.1, p4 1.2,
TCGMSG 4.02, on the Intel Paragon using the NX library and on the
Cray Y-MP2E/233.

Recent results on efficient and fast methods for high speed computers
will be discussed at this workshop. The use of these methods in
connection with big application packages will also be treated. Finally,
the use of scalable libraries will be of particular interest. The
workshop will be preceeded by a one-day tutorial devoted to tools for
heterogeneous network computing, where Jack Dongarra will be the main
lecturer.
The main purpose of this workshop is to bring together scientists
working with large computational problems and specialists in the field of
parallel methods and efficient exploitation of modern high-speed
computers. Some classes of numerical methods appear again and again
during the numerical treatment of many problems in different fields of
science and engineering. The aim of this workshop is to select some of
these numerical methods and plan further experiments on several types of
parallel computers. The key lectures will show an overview of different
parallel and vector computers. They will review the most important
numerical algorithms and scientific applications on parallel computers.

SUMMARY
The Director of the MHPCC is the chief operating administrator of
the Maui Center and reports to the UNM Center for High
Performance Computing (CHPC) which administers the project for
UNM. The Director is responsible for programs at the MHPCC
including user services, systems and operations, and outreach,
including education, economic development, and technology
transfer.
This is a major DoD and academic facility and the Director has a
primary responsibility for its effectiveness and success. The
MHPCC is expected to be established with a strong "Center-based"
management structure. The MHPCC has the strong backing of a
committed team of institutional partners.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties involve overseeing a $30-50M budget over the first three
years, an initial staff of 20-30, overseeing the installation of
$20M in latest IBM Scalable Parallel Processor (SPP) computers
and other equipment, overseeing the installation and maintenance
of a Maui to CONUS network, directing the development of an
effective user services system to span the country, and
overseeing the development of an effective outreach operation to
DoD, business, industry, government labs, and education.
The Director will become the major advocate for the MHPCC, be a
national leader in high performance computing inside the DoD, in
the general user community, and in business and industry, and
maintain close ties with the UNM CHPC. The Director will be
responsible, in collaboration with the UNM CHPC, for seeking
enhancement funding for the MHPCC.
Although the Director is the chief operation officer of the
MHPCC, the Director must also perform duties which are necessary
to keep the Center operational and effective. Thus, the Director
must occasionally perform user services duties, operational
duties and liaison duties which are normally delegated to
subordinates.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum requirements are a Ph.D. in an appropriate scientific or
engineering discipline or an MS degree plus applicable
experience; at least 10 years experience in research, operations,
and administration in high performance computing. At least two
of these years must involve high level administrative experience
in a high performance computing. Must be legally authorized to
work in the USA and must have or be able to obtain a SECRET level
clearance.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE
It is desired that the Director have a national reputation in
high performance computing with membership on national committees
and boards recognized in the field of high performance, or
scientific computing.
The position also involves working with diverse organizations,
establish priorities, and manage and direct financial resources.
The candidate should have extensive supervisory and management
ability, the ability to develop rapport with a wide constituency
including the local community and business interests, and shall
have demonstrated emotional and financially stability,
dependability, and the ability to work in extremely stressful
situations.
Extensive travel is required with the ability to diplomatically
represent the MHPCC, UNM, and the Center Partners at national
forums and in political situations. The position will require
considerable additional time other than normal working hours, and
requires locating in Maui, Hawaii.
