Subject: New Book, Numerical Simulation of Incompressible Viscous Flow

Numerical Simulation of Incompressible Viscous Flow: Methods and
Applications By Roland Glowinski and Tsorng-Whay Pan
Series in Applied and Numerical Mathematics, vol. 7

This book on finite element-based computational methods for solving
incompressible viscous fluid flow problems shows readers how to apply
operator splitting techniques to decouple complicated computational
fluid dynamics problems into a sequence of relatively simpler
sub-problems at each time step, such as hemispherical cavity flow,
cavity flow of an Oldroyd-B viscoelastic flow, and particle
interaction in an Oldroyd-B type viscoelastic fluid. Efficient and
robust numerical methods for solving those resulting simpler
sub-problems are introduced and discussed. Interesting computational
results are presented to show the capability of methodologies
addressed in the book.

This book discusses finite element based computational methods for
solving incompressible viscous fluid flow problems. Fundamental
aspects of the computational methodologies, and extensions for
advanced engineering applications are also presented.

Subject: Postdoc Position, Optimal Control, Czech Technical Univ

Mixed-integer programming is a rich area of research in optimization,
largely driven by applications. Recently, there has been much interest
in the operations of pipelines carrying natural gas. In contrast, the
scheduling of multiproduct pipeline systems carrying oil and oil
products introduces several complications: multi-commodity aspects,
operational constraints of the refineries, non-trivial models of the
cost of pumping (driven by electricity markets, but also the sale of
ancillary services therein), and railway logistics as an alternative
to pumping.

In collaboration with a major operator of pipelines carrying crude oil
and numerous oil products, we are seeking a post-doctoral fellow
interested in the optimal scheduling of a multiproduct pipeline system
using a mixed- integer programming. With the help of a team of
professional software engineers at a third-party software house, the
research will translate into production, improving the operator's
performance with respect to electricity efficiency.

The post-doctoral fellow will benefit from the mentorship by Jakub
Marecek and Vyacheslav Kungurtsev in the Dept. of Computer Science of
the Czech Technical University. The position is full time and limited
to 3 years, but can be extended in case of mutual interest. The
studentship comes with a monthly salary almost double the average pay
in Prague, the Czech Republic (cca. EUR 40K p.a. before a notably low
tax). The Czech capital regularly ranks among five European cities
within the world's best cities in the world to live in (cf. Time Out
Magazine index for 2021) and CTU's offices are in a centrally-located
palace with a view of Prague Castle. For more information, please see
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prague

We seek candidates with a Ph.D. degree in Mathematics, Computer
Science, Operations Research, Engineering or related disciplines, and
some experience in integer programming. A preference is given to:
candidates with experience in optimal control; candidates with
experience with scheduling or multi-commodity flow models; candidates
with experience in programming in Python. We expect to start
interviewing candidates in September 2022 and the position will be
available until filled.

Czech Technical University (CTU) is the oldest non-military technical
university in Europe. In the academic year 2020/21, CTU offered 130
degree programs in Czech and 84 in English. CTU's control-theory
research is well known, especially thanks to Vladimir Kucera. CTU's
Artificial Intelligence Center (AIC) with a staff of 150 is widely
recognized as one of the best in the region. CSRankings.org currently
ranks it at number 6 in Europe within AI and Computer Vision, after
Technion, ETH Zurich, Imperial, Max Planck Society, and EPFL. Since
March 2020, Jakub Marecek leads the Optimization research group within

Summary: Two aspects of turbulent flows have been the subjects of
extensive, but separate, research efforts: their macroscopic
properties and their turbulent spectrum. Linking these two strands of
turbulence represents a major step and opens new possibilities in
controlling the macroscopic response through tuning the statistical
properties of turbulent flows, notably by using additives such as
polymers, surfactants, or air bubbles. Three specific objectives have
been identified and will be tackled in three work-packages: 1. Uncover
the roughness-dependence of friction drag in 2D turbulent flows;
2. Probe the phenomenon of drag reduction in 2D turbulent flows;
3. Develop an original 2D Couette cell with different statistical
properties of turbulence.

Profile: PhD in scientific computing or in fluid mechanics with strong
competences in scientific programming in FORTRAN. Experiences in High
Performance Computing will be greatly appreciated. Fluent in english.
Salary: 25900 Euro/year. Expected beginning of the position: October

including a complete list of publications names of three references
including email addresses to: Dr Patrick Fischer:

Helmut Schmidt University / UniBw Hamburg (Germany) offers a position
as PhD student or Postdoc (f/m/d) in Applied Mathematics for three
years.

The scientific activity is carried out within the framework of the
third party funded research collaborative project "HiBRAIN- Holistic
method of a combined data- and model-based electrode design supported
by artificial intelligence; Subproject: Optimal experimental design
and model development". Optimal design of experiments with partial
differential equations (PDE). The goal of optimal design of
experiments is to minimize the uncertainty in the estimation of the
model parameters. Mathematically, it is a nested optimization
task. After the estimator of the selected parameters is found, its
covariance is optimized in a stochastic sense. The classical
optimality criteria are functionals of the eigenvalues of the
covariance matrix of the model parameters. In this project, classical
methods of optimal design of experiments as well as Bayesian
approaches and stochastic optimization approaches can be
considered. Artificial intelligence support will be explored in all
parts of the project in collaboration with HiBRAIN partners. Support
the teaching of calculus, linear algebra, and numerical mathematics.

Qualification Requirements: A master's degree in mathematics completed
with above average results; Excellent knowledge in programming with
C++ or Python; Very good knowledge of German and English, both written
and spoken. Furthermore preferred: Special knowledge of optimization
with partial differential equations as constraints; Sound knowledge of
discretization methods for PDE, preferably finite element method;
Experience with artificial intelligence and machine learning may be
helpful, but is not required; Experience in project management of
scientific projects; Strong interest in scientific work as well as the
ability to teach.

The project involves the use of reinforcement learning, optimal
control and computer vision techniques to understand and provide
rehabilitative solutions for spinal curvature problems (scoliosis) in
Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). SMA is a genetic disease which affects
the nerve cells in the spinal cord connecting the brain to the muscles
of the body. Due to the impact of the condition on the muscles
supporting the spine, almost all children with SMA develop scoliosis -
a progressive curvature of the spine into an "S" shape.

The overarching goal is to use a unique combination of reinforcement
learning, optimal control and computer vision techniques, and
algorithms to develop patient-specific, physiologically-based human
skeletal models of SMA patients that reconstruct movement and
deterioration patterns of patients with scoliosis. This will be used
to understand how scoliosis develops/worsens and determine avenues and
means for prevention and rehabilitation.

Subject: PhD Positions, Numerical Analysis, Germany

The Institute of Numerical Simulation is looking for 2 research
assistants (each 75%) in the field of numerical analysis for a period
of three years as soon as possible. The research group of Barbara
Verfurth is interested in the design, numerical analysis and
implementation of numerical methods for multiscale problems. The
envisioned research aims at the development and analysis of numerical
methods for nonlinear, random, and dynamical multiscale problems and
is part of a project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Candidates should have a Master's degree in mathematics (or closely
related field) with s strong background in the theory of numerical
methods for partial differential equations and numerical
analysis. Some programming knowledge is highly beneficial.

The Institute or Numerical Simulation covers research and teaching of
numerical analysis, simulation and scientific computing. It is part of
Bonn Mathematics and provides a stimulating research environment.
