Subject: Call for Nominations, Popov Prize 2020

Ninth Vasil A. Popov Prize
Call for nominations and request for donations
Deadline: January 31, 2020

The Vasil A. Popov Prize was established in memory of the late
Professor Vasil A. Popov (1942-1990) of Bulgaria in recognition of his
contributions to approximation theory and related areas of
mathematics. The prize was created in 1995 through donations from his
colleagues and admirers, and is awarded every three years to an
outstanding young approximation theorist with at most 6 years of
professional experience beyond the terminal degree. Previous
recipients of the Prize have been Albert Cohen, Sobonne Universite,
Paris (1995), Arno Kuijlaars, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium
(1998), Emmanuel Candes, Standford University, USA (2001), Serguei
Dennissov, University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA (2004), Mauro
Maggioni, John Hopkins University, USA (2007), Joel Tropp, California
Institute of Technology, USA (2010), Andriy Bondarenko, National Taras
Shevchenko University of Kyiv, Ukraine (2013), and Jean-Marie
Mirebeau, Universite Paris Saclay (2016).

The Ninth Vasil A. Popov Prize will be awarded at the Foundation of
Computational Mathematics international conference, to be held June
15-24, 2020 in Vancouver, Canada. Eligibility for this Prize is
restricted to mathematicians who did not have their terminal degree on
January 31, 2014. We strongly encourage you to submit letters of
nomination for any eligible candidate you feel has made outstanding
contributions in fields related to Vasil Popov's work. Letters of
support of the candidates are also welcome.

The deadline for the call is January 31, 2020. For more details or to
view the Call for Nominations, please visit:
https://www.ljll.math.upmc.fr/popov-prize/call-for-nomination-2020/

The Vasil A. Popov Prize is good for mathematics ! It brings
recognition to an important area of mathematical research, bridging
theory and applications, and encourages young talented mathematicians
engaging into this area. On behalf of the Popov Prize Selection
Committee, I am asking for your help. The Prize is maintained solely
through generous contributions from colleagues and friends. Please
consider making a donation today to the Popov Foundation. 100% of your
generous contribution directly supports the Vasil A. Popov Prize. Our
goal is to raise 4000 Euros so that we may continue to recognize and
promote outstanding mathematicians with this award. For more

Subject: Young Investigators Minisymposium, WCCM-ECCOMAS, France, Jul 2020

the ECCOMAS Congress 2016 with great success, is quite different from
the regular minisymposia in order to particularly attract young
researchers (see MS abstract at
https://www.wccm-eccomas2020.org/admin/Files/FileAbstract/a160.pdf for
all details). For example, the session format will allow you to give
presentations as a team of two researchers ("Presentation In Pairs")
or of negative research results ("Things That Did Not Work As
Expected").

Important 1: Even if you should not consider yourself a "young
researcher" anymore (ECCOMAS sets the formal limit at the age of 40),
please forward this invitation to other scholars (PhD students,
Postdocs) in your group or at your university.

Important 2: Due to the unconventional character of this
minisymposium, authors have the possibility to give a presentation in
this minisymposium in addition to a regular one in another session.

If you are not sure on how to prepare your presentation and in which
way it should be different from regular talks, the organizers are more
than happy to help - simply write us an e-mail to get in touch
([email protected]). To submit your abstract, you need to
register on the conference website first
(www.wccm-eccomas2020.org). Having completed the registration form,
you will receive an e-mail with your username and password, which can
be used to login to your WCCM-ECCOMAS 2020 account. From your
"Registered Participants Area" click "Add Abstract" to prepare
abstract submission. Do not forget to specify the right minisymposium
name ("2100 Other / ECCOMAS Young Investigators Minisymposium").

The deadline for abstract submission is December 15, 2019.

Project: Image processing for flood detection and prediction
Supervisor: Prof. Jo Ueyama

Job Description: Flooding has been problematic in the state of Sao
Paulo, especially in the rainy seasons. To mitigate the flood problem,
we devised and deployed an Internet of Thing-based platform to detect
and predict. Along with this platform, a camera that collects stream
images periodically has been made available. The project aims to
detect and predict flooding using images and thus automate the process
of flood identification without human intervention. Such an approach
only uses cameras without the need for the river height sensor that
remains submerged in the urban streams. Such sensors are usually
susceptible to failure as they are continually in contact with river
water. The successful candidate will work to establish a collaboration
between image processing and the Internet of Thing areas.

Requirements: Applicants should have a PhD in Computer Science or
related fields such as Computer Engineering. Candidates must have got
their PhD in the last 5 years.

Application: Please send your application before January 31st 2020 to:
[email protected] and [email protected]. Please indicate
"post-doctoral application - Image Processing" in the subject line.
Applications should include curriculum vitae, statement of research
interests and two contact information for recommendation letters (only
PDF files).

Contract Condition: Grant from FAPESP under the Research, Innovation
and Dissemination Centers (RIDC- CeMEAI) (http://www.fapesp.br/en/17,

maintaining safety standards is a challenging and exciting area of
modern research. This position is part of an ongoing project that won
the 2019 EURO Operations Research Practice Prize.

The successful candidate will have completed, or be nearing
completion, of a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics,
Statistics, or a related discipline. In addition, they must have
strong software engineering and programming skills.

The problems in Road Design are wide and varied. As such the

time sensitive client project, the following soft skills are desirable
experience that should be highlighted with the application letter:
communication skills with industrial collaborators, project management
skill, supervision and mentoring of undergraduate and master's
students.

To apply, submit a Cover Letter and CV to [email protected]

The cover letter should clearly indicate, and justify, which areas of
experience are applicable. In addition, arrange for 3 reference
letters to be sent directly to the above.

This is a 1-year position with renewal for a 2nd year if
warranted. Only successful candidates will be contacted. The preferred
starting date is January 2020 but summer, fall or even January 2021
start date would be considered.

Subject: PhD/Postdoc Positions, Machine Learning/Data Mining, Simula, Norway

We have two PhD/Postdoc positions in machine learning and data mining
for personalized cancer screening at Simula Metropolitan Center for
Digital Engineering (SimulaMet), Oslo, Norway. The positions are
available as a part of the Norwegian-funded research project DeCipher
in collaboration between SimulaMet, Cancer Registry of Norway,
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), and Karolinska
University Hospital. The project combines the unique Norwegian and
Swedish registry data from more than 2 million individuals including
extensive screening histories and epidemiological expertise, with
LLNL's exceptional HPC computing infrastructure, data analysis and
modelling experience, and with Simula's expertise in machine learning
methodology.

The DeCipher project aims to develop a data-driven framework to
provide a personalized time-varying risk assessment for cancer
initiation and identify subgroups of individuals and factors leading
to similar disease progression. Specifically, the following
sub-projects will be investigated:
- Development of matrix factorization approaches for reconstruction of
individualized disease trajectories from longitudinal screening data.
- Development of data fusion approaches based on matrix and tensor
factorizations for joint analysis of longitudinal screening data and
lifestyle information as well as other relevant health data.

Application deadline: December 01, 2019.

Interested candidates can learn more about the project and submit
their applications through the application portal:
