Subject: Linear Algebra MOOC offered again
We are once again offering "Linear Algebra: Foundations to Frontiers"
(LAFF) as a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on the edX platform
(https://www.edx.org/course/linear-algebra-foundations-to-frontiers-2).
This is a full semester introductory course on linear algebra that
emphasizes connections to high performance computing.
The course leverages partitioning of matrices and vectors to link
abstraction in mathematics to abstraction in algorithms and
implementations. Since these abstractions are leveraged in graduate
courses on numerical linear algebra, many graduate students have used
LAFF to review in preparation for such a course. You may want to
suggest doing so to students if you are teaching more advanced linear
algebra materials this fall. The course can be audited for free.
We are planning on offering "Advanced Linear Algebra: Foundations to
Frontiers," a followup graduate level MOOC on NLA, starting January
2020. For that MOOC we are also developing notes that can be used
independent of the MOOC, as an alternative to a traditional text. The
notes are being authored with PreTeXt and will have short embedded
videos and carefully scaffolded exercises with full solutions. For

Subject: Report on Sparse Days at CERFACS 2019
The Annual Sparse Days at CERFACS was held on 11-12 July 2019. There
were 54 participants with nearly a half from outside France and ten
from the USA, nine were from industry, eleven from Labs, thirteen from
Cerfacs and the rest from the university sector. There were sixteen
talks covering a wide range of sparse topics. All were in half-hour
sessions and there were, as usual, no ``invited talks'' or parallel
sessions. This all contributes to a relaxed atmosphere in which
participants can engage with each other helped by the generous
French-style lunch breaks and the excellent subsidised conference
dinner that was held, as last year, in Les Caves de la Marechale in
the centre of Toulouse.

and participants in conference sessions, lunch breaks, and the
conference dinner.
Take a look and think to join us next year! The dates are tentatively
