We are very happy to invite you to the first pyMOR School, which will
take place from 7-11 October 2019 at the Max Planck Institute for
Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems, Magdeburg, Germany.

reduction in their work using pyMOR (https://pymor.org). The school
will consist of both introductory lectures to model order reduction
and pyMOR as well as programming sessions. Participants are encouraged
to bring their own problems to work on. Basic knowledge of Python and
packages from the SciPy stack (NumPy, SciPy, matplotlib) is assumed.

Numerical methods and HPC for industrial applications

For designing or improving industrial systems and processes, there is
today an increasing need for faster and more accurate simulations. The
objectives of SimRace 2019 are to share and discuss, in a
multidisciplinary vision, mathematical models, numerical methods and
computational techniques for solving complex problems in fluid and
solid mechanics.
SimRace 2019 offers the opportunity to mix HPC and numerical analysis
worlds in a synergistic way, bringing together scientists and
engineers and providing a melting pot of ideas and views between
researchers, developers and end-users.
SimRace 2019 is the place to be for exchanging knowledge at the
forefront of progress in both fields, with a special focus on:
- Model coupling (FSI, THM, CHT)
- Numerical methods and algorithms in science and engineering
(numerical schemes, reduced basis, highly scalable solvers)
- A posteriori error estimation and adaptivity

Description: The School of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics
undertakes high-quality research in a wide variety of areas and is
home to several NRF rated scientists. In the domain of Applied
Mathematics the School's main research areas include symmetry methods
of differential equations, mathematical modelling, control theory,
optimization, numerical analysis and fluid mechanics. Furthermore,
research areas are in mathematics of finance, which include but not
limited to portfolio optimization, risk management, risk measurement,
stochastic processes in finance and interested rate modelling. We
seek applicants with research and teaching experience in the area of
optimal control theory. Qualifications: For Associate Professor:
Applicants must hold a doctorate in non-linear optimal control theory,
optimal control of partial differential equations (PDEs), or other
applied areas of control theory and have a minimum of five years
teaching experience at a tertiary institution and must submit a
teaching potfolio. Furthermore, the incumbent must have a sustained
research record and publications in recognised journals and or
scholarly books and experience in postgraduate supervision. The South
African National Research Foundation rating is an advantage (if
available). For Full Professor: Applicants must hold a doctorate in in
non-linear optimal control theory, optimal control of partial
differential equations (PDEs), or other applied areas of control
theory and have a minimum of ten years teaching experience at a

Subject: Postdoc Position, Numerical Methods for Viscoelastic Flows
A postdoc position related to viscoelastic two-phase flows will be
available at the New Jersey Institute of Technology Department of
Mathematical Sciences. The research is funded by the American Chemical
Society Petroleum Research Fund and will involve developing accurate
and robust numerical methods for viscoelastic flows and special
computational algorithms capable of coupling the solution of the
continuum equations to microscopic models. The appointment is
initially for one year.
Candidates should have a demonstrated experience in code development
for multiphase flows, including interface tracking methods on adaptive
meshes, a good knowledge of parallel programming and high-performance
computing, and proficiency in C and/or C++ languages and Linux
operating systems. Other desired experiences include knowledge of the
volume-of-fluid and/or immersed boundary methods, parallel programming

Post-Doctoral Fellowship on
Reinforcement Learning for Hydropower
A post-doctoral fellowship is offered in the field of reinforcement
learning applied to hydropower optimization. The position is fully
funded by an IVADO research grant. The fellow will work under the
guidance of Pascal Cote, RioTinto; Michel Denault, HEC Montreal; and
Dominique Orban, Polytechnique Montreal. All are members of the GERAD
research center.
The candidate is expected to hold a Ph.D. in applied math, operations
research, computer science, engineering or a closely-related
field. Excellent coding skills, a proven capacity to carry independent
research, strong experience in mathematical programming (especially
reinforcement learning), excellent verbal and written communication
skills in English or French, are all important criteria. Experience
with hydropower is an asset but not required.

has a vacancy for a talented PhD student, on the subject of digital
twins to understand flow in pipelines.
In the context of an intensive cooperation between research groups in
the Netherlands (CWI, Amsterdam, Shell in Amsterdam) and in India
(IISc Bangalore, Shell Bangalore), we are hiring a PhD student in the
Netherlands. This work is based on advanced deep learning, detailed
computational fluid dynamics, and the incorporation of sensor data in
flow solvers.
The preferred excellent candidate has a Master's degree with a solid
background in computational fluid dynamics, and experience in, or high
interest in, neural networks and machine learning
algorithms. Preferable qualifications for candidates include proven
research talent, an excellent command of English, and good academic
writing and presentation skills.
The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective
Labour Agreement for Research Centres.
